Those of you who, like me, have people come and go from your life, would probably find some solace from the slides.

Granted, people come to us for a reason, a season or a lifetime, but we will never know which it is until….they leave, especially the “seasonal” friend. We can identify the “reasonal” friend – that is the one who comes to help us out when we needed it most, or to give us a lesson in life. And we can only hope that our good friends are lifetime friends, but will we ever know for sure? If we cling to them, and they turn out to be just “reasonal” or “seasonal”, we suffer, don’t we?

The “simple” thing to do with friendships and even family, then, would be to take each moment as being precious and valuable. Do not look back at the past (especially the quarrels!). So, each time you meet your friend or loved one, think of it as the last meeting in this lifetime. Do not have expectations or everlasting friendship for the future. Just cherish the present moment, just as we cherish our breadth, and make the encounter a pleasant and memorable one. We will continue meeting in many lifetimes if we are kammically destined to do so.

Thank you for being part of my life…..

The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, known commonly as the Egyptian Museum was first built in Boulak. In 1891, it was moved to Giza Palace of “Ismail Pasha” which housed the antiquities that were later moved to the present building situated at Tahrir Square in Cairo, Egypt. The building which has 107 halls was built during the reign of Khedive Abbass Helmi II in 1897, and opened on November 15, 1902 . The Egyptian Museum is home to an extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities. On the ground floor of the museum there are the huge statues. Today, the upper floor houses small statues, jewels, Tutankhamun treasures and there are about 9 mummies displayed. One of these is Pharaoh Ramses III, who was an extremely skilled warrior and the newly discovered mummy of Queen Hatshepsut. Overall, it has 120,000 items, with a representative amount on display, and many treasures of King Tutankhamun.

The above information pertains to the state of the museum prior to the Egyptian Revolution of 2011. During the Egyptian Revolution of 2011, the museum was broken into, and two mummies were reportedly destroyed. Several artifacts were also shown to have been damaged.

The Egyptian Museum is without doubt, the greatest collection of Egyptian antiquities and it is a place of true discovery. If you are planning to visit the museum, try not to see everything in one day. Otherwise, you may not remember anything at all! Perhaps, go at least twice.

Facts: The average life span of an eagle is approximately 30 years. The eagle, like many living organisms, does not have the luxury of making the decision to extend their life cycle far beyond what is normal for its species. In captivity, an eagle may live beyond what the average life expectancy is, because it receives both regular and nutritious meals, has excess to veterinary care and can be sheltered from the harsh elements by housing provided by the facility caring for the bird. Even then, the life span is in no way extended as far as this tale is suggesting.

Although this tale is merely a myth that strays far from the reality of an eagle’s life, the moral of the tale presented on the final slide ‘Why is change needed?’ provide a vivid illustration of the philosophy, that sometimes one must shed the past in order to move forward or as often expressed, “In order to rebuild, you must first tear down.”

HOW Disposable Chopstick is Made?

Chopsticks are made from a variety of materials: bamboo, wood, plastic, bone, metal, jade and ivory. Disposable chopsticks are made from bamboo or wood. Bamboo and wood chopsticks are cheap, low in temperature conduction and provide good grip for holding food due to their matte surfaces. They can warp and deteriorate with continued use. Almost all cooking and disposable chopsticks are made of bamboo or wood.

But, no matter where you live, the fact remains that disposable chopsticks are made by clear cutting forests for the wood. On a recent updates, apparently, China’s Ministry of Commerce has sent out a warning to chopstick makers in June to warn them that they will face local government restrictions: “Production, circulation and recycling of disposable chopsticks should be more strictly supervised”. The restrictions are aimed at decreasing the use of the throwaway utensil… – LA Times

Let us begin with China’s 1.3 billion populations. In one year, they go through roughly 45 billion pairs of the throwaway utensils; that averages out to nearly 130 million pairs of chopsticks a day. And the export market accounts for an additional 18 billion pairs annually.

Greenpeace China has estimated that to keep up with this demand, 100 acres of trees need to be felled every 24 hours. Think here of a forest larger than Tienanmen Square — or 100 American football fields — being sacrificed every day. That works out to roughly 16 million to 25 million felled trees a year. Deforestation is one of China’s gravest environmental problems, leading to soil erosion, famine, flooding, carbon dioxide release, desertification and species extinction.

However, if you compare 100 acres per day to the size of China’s forests, it still isn’t that much as China is a big country, but chopsticks are far from the only thing pressuring Chinese ecosystems.

The Bring Your Own Chopsticks movement has been gaining momentum, but is still far from succeeding in changing people’s mindset. But there is some hope on the horizon: As China grows richer, more restaurants will be able to afford the equipment to wash and sterilize reusable chopsticks.

Sky Burial

Sky burial or ritual dissection was once a common funerary practice in Tibet wherein a human corpse is cut in specific locations and placed on a mountaintop, exposing it especially to birds of prey.

In Tibet, the practice is known as jhator, which literally means, “giving alms to the birds.” Jhator is considered an act of generosity on the part of the deceased, since the deceased and his or her surviving relatives are providing food to sustain living beings. Generosity and compassion for all beings are important virtues in Buddhism.

The majority of Tibetans adhere to Buddhism, which teaches rebirth. There is no need to preserve the body, as it is now an empty vessel. Birds may eat it, or nature may let it decompose. So the function of the sky burial is simply the disposal of the remains. In much of Tibet, the ground is too hard and rocky to dig a grave, and with fuel and timber scarce, a sky burial is often more practical than cremation.

“Sky burial and open cremation may initially appear grotesque for Westerners, especially if they have not reflected on their own burial practice of embalming . For Tibetan Buddhists, sky burial and cremation are templates of instructional teaching on the impermanence of life.”

The full jhator procedure – as shown in the slides is elaborate and expensive. Those who cannot afford it simply place their deceased on a high rock where the body decomposes or is eaten by birds and animals.

Normally, after the death of a Tibetan, the deceased will be cleaned, wrapped in white cloth and left untouched for three or five days. During these several days monks will chant around the corpse. Family members stop other activities in order to create a peaceful environment to allow convenient passage for ascension of souls into heaven.

Before dawn on the sky burial day, the corpse is sent to the burial site among mountains which is always far from the residential area. Lamas lead a ritual procession to the charnel ground, chanting to guide the soul. There are few charnel grounds in Tibet. They are usually located near monasteries.

After the chanting, the body breakers prepare the body for consumption by the vultures. The jhator usually takes place at dawn. The body is unwrapped and the first cut is made on the back. Hatchets and cleavers are used to quickly cut the body up, in a definite and precise way. Flesh is cut into chunks of meat.

As the body breakers begin, juniper incense is burned to summon the vultures for their tasks, to eat breakfast and to be Dakinis. After the body has been totally separated, the birds land and hop about, grabbing for food. Relatives may remain nearby during the jhator, possibly in a place where they cannot see it directly.

In most accounts, vultures are given the whole body. It is considered a bad omen if the vultures will not eat, or if even a small portion of the body is left after the birds fly away. Alternatively, when only the bones remained, they are broken up with mallets, ground with tsampa – barley flour with tea and yak butter or milk, and given to crows and hawks that have waited until the vultures had departed. This is to ensure the entire body of the deceased eaten and to assure ascent of the soul.
